Of Changu Narayan Shrine

Located inside the Kathmandu Valley about 20 kms. Northeast of Kathmandu city standing at an altitude of 1541m. the temple of Changu Narayan is considered the oldest Hindu shrine. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector and one of the holy trinity. The temple site was listed in The World Monument List in 1979 A.D. and thus is recognized as a World Heritage Site.

The temple dates back to 325 A.D. The time of King Haridutta Varma who built the shrine along with the temple of Goddess Chhinnamasta Adidevi. Later the settlement of 700 houses around the temple was constructed by King Vishnu Gupta. In 464 A.D. the first historical king of Nepal, the Lichhavi King Manadeva erected a stone pillar with inscription written on it which still is evident.

The site is very important from historical, religious and cultural aspects. The temple is of two storeys and built in pagoda style. The wood carvings, metal carvings and stone carvings found in the site portrays the rich art and architecture of the country.

For the Hindu devotees the site is very sacred therefore they come here from all around the country.

The site is located on the western hillock of the Dolagiri ridge from where one can get a magnificent view of Kathmandu valley.

Of Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Project

Located about 13kms Northeast of proper Kathmandu Shivapuri is regarded as a safe haven for endangered animals and birds. The region accounts for one fourth of total water supply in the valley. Within its vicinity of 120 sq.kms Shivapuri features eight species of endangered mammals, among them black and two other types of leopards, hundred and seventy-seven different species of birds, hundred and two different types of butterflies and hundred and twenty-nine types of mushrooms. The resources of major rivers – Bagmati and Bisnuti – in Kathmandu valley lie within Shivapuri watershed project.

In the Shivapuri range the highest hill stands at 2732m. During March/April rhododendrns blossom thriughout the hills.

Of Budhanilkantha

Located about 10 kms North of Kathmandu proper the huge single black stone sleeping icon of Lord Vishnu, the protector is one of its kind dating prior to 12th century.
