Besides exploring the Langtang valley, on this trek, we visit the lake of Gosainkund, a holy site visited by thousands of Hindu devotees annually.
Gosainkunda Lake is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the representative of time and one of the Hindu holy trinity. According to the legend, to quench the thirst caused by holding an immensely potent poison in his throat, which could have destroyed life itself had it fallen on Earth Lord Shiva pierced the mountains with his trident for water. A lake was created by the same water and it is believed Lord Shiva rested in it. The lake was Gosainkunda. Till this day Hindus regard the black stone in the lake as the Lord Shiva himself. In the month of August during the festival of ‘Gaijatra’ pilgrims visit this sacred site.
Laurebinayak, on the route from Singompa to the lake offers superb views of the Annapurnas, Ganesh himal, Manaslu and the Langtang range.
Helambu is the closest region to Kathmandu inhabited by the Sherpas. The language used here is different than the one spoken in Solokhumbhu region although both the dialects are derived from Tibetan. Towards the north Helambu is bordered by the Langtang and the Jugal Himalayan ranges therefore the 'people of this region is also known as Yolmo wa' or the people from the dwelling shielded by the mountains.
