1. Jomsom teahouse trek with Holi – Festival of color
Mar 09, 2009 – Mar 28, 2009
20 days trip
Grade 3

Muktinath TempleJomsom is a classic tea house trek on the busy trade route leading to Mustang. The area boasts some of the best tea houses, owned by the Thakali people of Kaligandaki valley. We begin our trek in Pokhara passing terraced rice fields and rhododendron forest before descending to Tatopani with a hot water spring. We pass the Kaligandakli valley--the deepest gorge on earth, Rupse Chahara " beautiful waterfall' and Thakali villages. Along the trail the views of the Annapurna Massif and Dhaulagiri are excellent. We also visit a sacred Hindu temple, Muktinath. We fly back to Pokhara from Jomsom in the morning.

Along the trail the views of the Annapurna Massif and Dhaulagiri are simply excellent.  Poonhill at 3194m offers stupendous views of the Himalayan peaks: Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna 1 (8091m), Manaslu (8157m), beautiful Machhapuchhare (6993m) and a range of numerous peaks.

The trail from Tadapani to Ghorepani and Kali Gandaki valley provide ample opportunities of bird watching.

Poonhill offers stupendous views of the Himalayas, thus it is one of the most popular stations of the trek. The destinations mentioned in the itinerary are villages on the trek route.

Muktichhetra area:

Muktichhetra area is one the important destinations of Jomsom trek. Interpreted in English the term 'Muktichhetra' means 'place of salvation' where one is liberated from the on going cycle of life and death. Recognized as a highly regarded pilgrimage site people come here for spiritual quest, specially the Hindus and the Buddhists. For the believers getting to Muktichhetra implies taking a step towards freedom of soul, in other words releasing oneself from the misery of suffering.

Visiting the Newari pagoda styled shrine of Muktinath, located at an altitude of 3802m, is the main objective of trekking to Muktichhetra. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector and one of the Hindu holy trinity. The shrine is surrounded by a wall with 108 water spouts shaped as cows' heads pouring forth holy water. The belief is, a bath here, brings salvation after death.

The Jwala Mai temple, built in Tibetan mode and located nearby houses ever burning flame  by the side of spring of holy water. The flame, holy water and earth as a group give rise to Muktinath as the site of religious importance.

Since Lord Sakyamuni Buddha is regarded as the 9th reincarnation of Lord Vishnu Muktinath is revered highly by Buddhists too. In fact they regard the image of Vishnu as Avalokiteshwara.

Chortens, small Buddhist shrines of Nyingmapa sect are found here. The belief is that Padmashambhava, the founder of Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddism who introduced Buddhism to Tibet had meditated in the holy Muktichhetra. Till this day his footprints can been observed imprinted on a rock close to the temple.

Full moon of August / September is regarded as an auspicious time to be in Muktichhetra. Pilgrims in multitude of numbers visit the area then.

This trek can be considered as an ideal blend of spiritual quest and natural beauty. Booking
